Visiting Burmese Cities

The City Soundscapes Myanmar Sound Archive contains recordings from the capital Yangon as well as the cultural centre Mandalay in the heart of Myanmar. Acoustically, the two cities are very different from each other. Yangon is busy with old, noisy busses and lots of new cars; Mandalay, on the other hand, is alive with a merry mix of mopeds, mini-trucks and honking pickup busses.

Boat Traffic on Inle Lake

As idyllic as the pictures of Inle Lake might seem, once you hear the acoustic impressions, you will no longer think of romance and unspoilt nature. The noise of the two-stroke motors used by the Burmese people to transport tourists and all sorts of materials across this idyllic lake is constant and quickly spoils the beautiful sights like the swimming gardens and the famous one-leg rowers. The latter look like they have defied gravity as they stand on their picturesque little floats. But they are merely doing what they have been doing for centuries: fishing, rowing with one leg...and posing. Ever since tourism came to Lake Inle, these rowers must have been photographed thousands of times!
