Sound Design - How to Use 3D Reverb

Impulse Response Plug-In Configuration

True 3D Reverb and Dual Surround Sound Reverb

True 3D reverb creates original 3D sound during playback, as long as impulse responses are available for all required audio channels. The IR1 Impulse Response Set from Avosound includes a variety of genuine and new 3D convolution reverb elements.

All 3D setups are compatible with 5.1 surround sound; thanks to the 3D configuration of the Auro-3D® 11.1 surround sound system, each 3D setup has two 5.0 surround sound reverbs. By recording all the 3D channels simultaneously, all 3D reverbs sport two complete 5.1 surround sound configurations that sound different because of the two sound layers. Although recorded in the same room, the acoustic differences between the sound levels is sometimes considerable - which offers you a 'natural' alternative to the impulse responses.

Reverb Configurations

Impulse responses that were recorded with 11 audio channels offer a variety of configurations. Starting with the 5.1 and 5.0 system levels, each level has its own surround sound configuration. In addition, various stereo configurations (gathered from the front and rear channels of the surround levels) are available for both layers. More configurations are possible by configuring other layers in relation to each other (see illustration at the top of the page).

Further information about reverb configurations of impulse responses and convolution reverb can be found here in our extensive tutorial on impulse responses and convolution reverb.

3D Reverb according to the principle of convolution reverb

Plug-ins with convolution reverb are good tools for creating reverb for 3D sound systems. Convolution reverb is created with a so-called impulse response, which can be thought of as an audio fingerprint of a room. To understand how convolution reverb works and how impulse responses are created, please read our detailed tutorial.

The Auro-3D® 11.1 Sound Format

The Auro-3D® 11.1 Sound Format

Auro-3D® 11.1 combines an additional 5.0 layer as well as a Voice of God ceiling channel with a conventional 5.1 surround setup. With Auro-3D® 11.1 (as well as with the Dolby Atmos system) a sound source can be positioned in three-dimensional space. In the case of Auro-3D® 11.1, this is accomplished with 11 audio channels.

To do justice to Auro-3D® 11.1, a total of 10 or 11 audio channels are required for the sound layers. If you want to add reverb in 3D quality, you also need to add an impulse response for each audio channel (two of them for stereo material).Read more about Impulse Responses in our detailed convolution reverb tutorial

This leads to a significant number of configurations. Since there are no 11-channel 3D reverb programs, two surround sound reverb plugins can be used for each sound layer, providing 3D playback. One plug-in feeds the main level, the other one feeds the upper level. A third mono plug-in can be used for the Voice of God channel.

Audio Routing Setup For 3D Spaces In DAW

To use the aforementioned reverb plug-ins, three audio buses need to be created (to send in mono or stereo, depending on the requirements). Naturally, the reverb signals of the plug-ins have to be sent to the corresponding output channels of the playback system.

3x Sending and Routing

  • Reverb 1 feeds a mono-send to the ceiling channel
  • Reverb 2 feeds the upper 5.0 channels
  • Reverb 3 feeds the main 5.0 channels

Use The Correct Impulse Responses

Impulse Response Plug-In Settings

All impulse responses are accurately labeled according to their position (along with a position image), so that the 3D position of the impulse response can be distributed correctly. If everything is correctly patched and routed, you should now have true 3D reverb.
